NC Farmers Caught Between Soaring Diesel Prices and Drought-Related Losses
North Carolina farmers are facing financial strain due to rising diesel prices during harvest season. James Byrd and his father R.H. Byrd Jr. of Byrd Family Farms in Harnett County spent Thursday harvesting over 25 acres of tobacco using five bag harvesters, which rely heavily on diesel fuel. The family farm has seen diesel costs double compared to last year, with current prices reaching $6.19 or $6.20 per gallon.
The increased expenses come at a critical time for the farm, as they also work to recover from drought-related losses in their corn crop. Byrd stated that the combination of higher fuel costs and reduced production has further narrowed already thin profit margins.
President Donald Trump recently mentioned that global diesel production is affected by the ongoing war involving Russia and Ukraine, with concerns about rising costs reaching Capitol Hill. Despite these economic pressures, the Byrd family remains optimistic, attributing their perseverance to faith.
