New Fortress Energy’s Mexico FLNG Unit Down Due to Mechanical Issue
New Fortress Energy’s floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit off the coast of Altamira, Mexico, has temporarily shut down due to a mechanical issue with its gas turbine. The company announced it expects the facility to resume operations by the end of the fourth quarter, as it collaborates with the turbine manufacturer to address the problem and restart the unit promptly.
The FLNG 1 unit, the company’s first Fast LNG installation, operates in partnership with Mexico’s state-owned utility CFE. It liquefies natural gas supplied through the Sur de Texas-Tuxpan pipeline and has a capacity of 1.4 million tonnes per annum. The facility produced its first LNG in July 2024 and shipped its inaugural cargo the following month to NFE’s La Paz terminal via the Energos Princess carrier.
New Fortress Energy recently secured a $700 million loan to support the Mexico FLNG unit. The financing will also cover the construction of FLNG 2, which is set to utilize the same proprietary modular liquefaction technology as FLNG 1.
