New Zealand Approves Taranaki Oil and Gas Permit Amid Energy Security Concerns
New Zealand's oil and gas production is set to increase with the approval of a new 10-year petroleum mining permit in the onshore Taranaki region. The permit, granted by New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals (NZP&M), will allow Matahio NZ Onshore Limited to extract oil and gas from the Puka field, which was discovered in 2012.
The permit area includes the promising Oru prospect, with estimated prospective resources of 1.8 million barrels of oil and 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas. The recoverable reserves from the Puka discovery are approximately 170,000 barrels of oil and 1.3 billion cubic feet of gas.
New Zealand's Resources Minister, Shane Jones, said that the new permit will 'bring additional natural gas to the domestic market over the next decade and generate valuable export earnings from new oil production.'
