Nigeria Customs Exempts CNG, LPG, EVs from Import Duty
The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced new fiscal guidelines that exempt certain compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and electric vehicles from import duty and value-added tax (VAT).
This exemption, issued under the Presidential Gas for Growth Initiative, covers vehicles and equipment that meet specific conditions set by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, through his spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, explained that the exempted vehicles include 100% CNG fuel vehicles, 100% LPG fuel vehicles, pure electric vehicles (EVs), and extended range EVs with a minimum pure electric range of 200 kilometers.
CNG and LPG conversion kits for petrol and diesel vehicles, tricycles, and motorbikes certified for resale by the Federal Ministry of Finance are also exempted, as well as semi-trailers configured with skid-mounted CNG, LPG, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks for gas distribution.
Importers seeking to use the exemption must obtain an Import Duty Exemption Certificate (IDEC) from the Federal Ministry of Finance and meet other regulatory requirements for importing eligible vehicles, equipment, and components.
