Nigeria Faces Decade-Long Struggle to Unlock Gas Potential
Nigeria's ambitious goal to fully harness its vast natural gas resources is being hindered by outdated pipeline infrastructure, according to energy experts. Dr. Eloho Innocent Amagada and Engr. Reuben Temerigha spoke at the 2026 International Pipeline Conference and Expo in Canada.
The country has an estimated 215.19 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves but lacks a reliable pipeline network to transport it efficiently. Amagada noted that the existing infrastructure spans over 2,500 kilometers but requires significant investment to expand and modernize.
Experts emphasize the importance of digitalizing pipeline management systems, incorporating advanced technologies such as intelligent in-line inspection, corrosion monitoring, and artificial intelligence. This would enable operators to predict and address risks before they result in failures, rather than relying on reactive management approaches.
