WA Residents Overwhelmingly Oppose Mining and Gas Royalty Distribution
A recent opinion poll conducted by WAMN News found that 94% of West Australians believe they do not receive a fair share of mining and gas royalties. The poll, which asked if the public is getting a fair share of return in mining and gas royalties, saw only six percent disagree with this statement.
The results show an increase of four percent from previous polls, while those who think they are receiving a fair share have dropped below ten percent. Independent media co-founder Jesse Noakes stated that he is not surprised by the results, given that most Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) produced in Western Australia is shipped overseas with very few returns for taxpayers.
Noakes cited Alcoa as an example of a foreign multinational company paying less than two percent in royalties while extracting natural resources. He expressed hope that the government listens to the people and takes action through policies, such as the recent rule-out of a gas tax and the discussion on a gas reservation policy.
Noakes believes this is a leading political issue for Australia and not just Western Australia, and that the government must weigh the will of the Australian people against the interests of corporate multinationals. He emphasized that the message is getting through, but acknowledged it's an easy situation due to the powerful vested interests involved.
