Nigeria's CNG Rollout Accelerates with NIPCO Leading the Charge
Nigeria is accelerating its rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and transition to new fuels, according to data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The number of operational refueling stations has risen to 176, while vehicle conversions have reached 78,900. This growth is supported by indigenous companies' investments in the industry.
NIPCO Group, a major player in Nigeria's oil and gas sector, has invested approximately two billion dollars in pipelines, CNG facilities, fuel retail outlets, and other energy-related infrastructure over the years, said Nagendra Verma, Managing Director of NIPCO. The company currently operates about 700 PMS, AGO, and LPG retail outlets across Nigeria.
The regulator's August data also pointed to broader improvements across Nigeria's oil and gas value chain, including higher crude oil production, stronger domestic refining activity, and increased supply of petroleum products and cooking gas. Crude oil production rose to 1.51 million barrels per day in August from 1.49 million bpd recorded in July.
