Nigeria's Oil Production Surges as Theft Declines
Nigeria's crude oil production has seen a significant boost in recent months due to a decline in oil theft. The country produced 1,677,777 barrels of crude oil and condensate per day in August 2026, exceeding its quota approved by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for the fourth consecutive month.
The improvement in production is attributed to enhanced pipeline surveillance and security measures. Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, a company founded by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), has been engaged by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to monitor export pipelines and detect illegal activities.
Tantita employs over 136,000 people directly in pipeline-related work, with indirect employment extending to more than 300,000 others. The company uses advanced technology, including surveillance systems, fingerprint scanners, facial recognition, retina scanners, and RFID smart cards, to secure infrastructure from vandalism and theft.
The decline in oil theft has resulted in significant crude losses for the country in previous years. However, industry stakeholders believe that the improved security measures are helping to restore output and protect revenues.
