North Africa's Grain Import Rely Shifts Amid Black Sea Disruptions
North African countries that rely heavily on food imports are facing disruptions to their grain supplies due to ongoing conflicts in the Black Sea region. Ukrainian and Russian grain exports have been severely impacted by recent attacks, resulting in a significant spike in global prices.
The MV Ramus vessel, carrying 6,161 tons of wheat from Ukraine, was seen anchored in Istanbul, Turkey on August 18, 2022, highlighting the extent of the disruptions. North African countries are being forced to seek alternative suppliers and boost domestic production in response to the shortages.
However, experts warn that if grain exports from the Black Sea resume reliably, these countries may revert back to their previous reliance on imports. This would maintain their dependence on external supplies, despite efforts to increase self-sufficiency.
