Northern Ireland Energy Prices Soar Amid Global Volatility
Northern Ireland's energy prices have increased significantly due to global market volatility. SSE Airtricity, the largest provider of natural gas in Northern Ireland, has raised its prices by almost 19% for domestic and small business customers. This means a typical household in the greater Belfast area will see an annual gas bill increase of nearly £172.
The company cited 'unprecedented levels of volatility in global energy markets and higher wholesale gas prices' as the reason for the price hike. Wholesale gas prices have effectively doubled since the US and Israel's attack on Iran.
Lucy Kells, a mother of two from east Belfast, expressed concern about the rising costs. 'You have to cut somewhere else and I already feel we are doing that,' she said. Naomi, who is affected by terminal illness, added that patients often struggle with additional costs, such as transport to hospital appointments.
Some energy providers will also see price increases, including Share Energy's 12.6% rise in electricity prices. The Consumer Council's Head of Energy Policy, Raymond Gormley, warned that other unregulated suppliers may follow suit and increase their tariffs.
