Northern Shield Pipeline Could Unlock East Coast Markets
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a new route for an oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario.
The proposed pipeline would move 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day, with plans to extend it further to Saint John, New Brunswick, providing access to European and global markets.
New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt has signaled her government's support for the project, calling it a 'nation-building' effort that would strengthen Canada's independence and sovereignty.
The federal government is expected to lead pipeline expansion to the East Coast, just as it is leading the West Coast project, which will move Alberta oil to British Columbia and is being led by Trans Mountain Corp.
