Northern Shield Pipeline Proposed to Reduce Canadian Reliance on US Infrastructure

Ontario and Alberta have proposed a massive cross-Canada oil pipeline project called the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, which would reduce Canada's reliance on US infrastructure. The 3,300-kilometer route would connect Hardisty, Alberta's main oil storage hub, with Sarnia, Ontario's central refining center.

The pipeline would carry approximately 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day for domestic use and export markets, potentially expanding to 800,000 barrels a day. The project aims to stabilize oil prices and strengthen national security by reducing Canada's dependence on US imports.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford emphasized that the project is not necessarily limited to private investment, stating 'I think it's a great investment, no matter if it's the government.' A feasibility study for the Northern Shield proposal will be completed by the end of this year.
