Gas prices have dropped in nearly every state over the past week, with Ohio seeing the most significant decrease after suspending fuel taxes. The state temporarily reduced gasoline taxes by 38.5 cents per gallon and diesel taxes by 47 cents, bringing average gas prices below $4 per gallon. Ohio plans to use $725 million in reserve funds to cover the tax reduction, providing motorists with some relief at the pump.

In Michigan, gasoline prices averaged $4.46 per gallon on Monday, October 5, down 21 cents from the previous week. However, prices remain higher than before the U.S. launched airstrikes on Iran. Michigan officials are debating whether to follow Ohio's lead and suspend fuel taxes. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has called for a federal gas tax suspension but opposes reducing state gas taxes, a stance that some lawmakers and candidates disagree with.

Nationwide, fuel prices are still elevated due to geopolitical tensions and regional refinery concerns. The price of diesel has also fallen, now selling for $6.62 per gallon in Michigan, down from a record high of $6.89 last month. While more crude oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, refineries are not receiving shipments, adding to the uncertainty in the market.

Tensions in the Middle East have expanded, with Saudi Arabia and Yemen launching a new offensive against the Iranian-backed Houthi militia. The Trump administration is reportedly considering new airstrikes in the region. Additionally, a Colorado climate change case before the U.S. Supreme Court seeks damages from two oil companies, potentially opening the door to more lawsuits against fossil fuel producers.
