Oil Price Drop Takes Toll on Energy Stocks Amid LNG Deals
Energy stocks took a hit on Tuesday as oil prices fell, casting a shadow over several major liquefied natural gas (LNG) deals and project approvals.
The sector's performance is closely tied to oil prices, with most energy stocks tracking the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude. WTI dropped 2.5% to $90.30 a barrel on Tuesday, while Brent eased 1.8% to $103.44 per barrel.
This decline in oil prices had a ripple effect on energy benchmarks, with the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) sliding 0.8% and the Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index dropping 1.8%. The sector's sensitivity to oil prices is particularly pronounced in oilfield services, which depend heavily on producers' spending plans.
