The US stock market took a hit on Monday after oil prices rose by 1.4% to $100.98 per barrel for Brent crude, and 4.2% to $96.26 per barrel for benchmark US crude. This increase in oil prices sent yields higher in the bond market, pressuring stocks. The S&P 500 fell by 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 380 points. Nvidia's announcement of a historic stock buyback was overshadowed by these events. In contrast, Europe's markets saw mixed results, with France's CAC 40 rising 0.2% and Germany's DAX slipping 0.1%. The US dollar dipped to 157.05 Japanese yen from 157.19 yen, while the euro fell to $1.1372 from $1.1393. In a separate development, Nvidia unveiled its new Open Agent Safety Platform, designed to stop artificial intelligence agents from going rogue. This platform includes open source software that sets boundaries for agents and can be extended to run on rival computing platforms. However, some companies are pushing for a coordinated slowdown of AI development to allow safety efforts to catch up. The Competition Bureau in Canada has launched an investigation into the use of minimum advertised pricing policies in the grocery sector, which can prevent retailers from advertising their lowest prices. This investigation is aimed at determining whether these policies create barriers for discount and new grocers, reduce price competition, and make it easier for grocers to coordinate prices.
