Oil Price Surge Lifts Rapeseed Demand Amid Ukraine Export Hopes

Rising oil prices have boosted demand for rapeseed and canola, sending futures to multi-month highs. November Brent crude futures rose 9.3% to $96.2/barrel, while November canola futures on the Winnipeg Exchange increased by 1.1% to CAD 823/t or $596/t.

The European Union's decision to import rapeseed from Ukraine instead of Canadian canola due to high prices is expected to drive demand for Ukrainian rapeseed exports in the coming months. However, processors are shifting their attention towards sunflower and soybeans, which may lead to a decrease in domestic demand for rapeseed.

In August, Ukraine exported 292.6 thousand tons of rapeseed and 95.4 thousand tons of rapeseed oil, equivalent to the export of 520 thousand tons of rapeseed. Logistical problems and increased processing of soybeans and sunflowers are expected to reduce supply from Ukraine in September-October.
