Oil Price Surge Spreads Cost Pressure to US Consumers

Surging oil prices are causing problems for US consumers, particularly when it comes to transportation costs. Rail networks play a crucial role in transporting agricultural products across the country, with California Department of Transportation data showing that they account for over 17% of total rail freight tonnage statewide.

The rising fuel surcharges for US grain rail transport have reached a record average of 48 cents per car-mile in the second week of September, up 153% year-on-year. This represents 11% of total rail shipping costs for corn and soybeans, compared to just 5% during the same period last year.

Diesel fuel also plays an essential role in agricultural operations such as harvesting, where associated costs are escalating rapidly. A recent Associated Press interview revealed that a single large combine harvester consumes around 200 gallons of diesel per day at current prices exceeding $6 per gallon, with fuel costs topping $1,200 daily.

The national average diesel price has climbed about another 60% compared to late February. As the autumn harvest gets underway, the combined surge in harvesting and logistics costs threatens to transmit production-side cost pressures directly to end consumers.

Oil prices show no signs of cooling, with a major ExxonMobil refinery suffering a full facility shutdown due to a power outage, adding fresh supply anxieties to a global refined products market already tightly constrained. Market observers interviewed noted that current futures prices continue to significantly understate the actual supply risks in physical crude markets.

'It is still too low,' said AMOS HOCHSTEIN, Managing Partner of TWG Global. 'What we've seen over the weekend is what happens when you have no safety nets anymore. Our supplies out of reserves are dwindling, so their flow rates are lower, and the Middle East is still as volatile and now just became significantly more dangerous.'

Elevated oil prices have already triggered public protests across multiple regions worldwide.
