Oil Price Tumble Triggers Gold Surge

The gold price rose over 1% on Monday after hostilities in the Middle East paused, causing oil prices to tumble by 5%. Investors hoped for a diplomatic solution that would de-escalate the conflict and ease concerns about inflation.

A senior Iranian official stated that Iran will halt its own attacks as long as the United States does the same. The pause in hostilities led US President Donald Trump's advisers to tell him they were running out of targets and expressed worries about depleting the US arsenal, causing the US to press pause on its bombing campaign.

The elevated crude oil prices had been a concern for market participants about inflation and higher-for-longer interest rates. However, gold's appeal as a non-yielding asset diminishes in a high-interest-rate environment.
