Oil Prices Decline as Stock Markets Surge on Strong Corporate Earnings
Oil prices declined on August 4 after falling over 5% the previous day. Brent crude dropped by 4.9% to $79.64 per barrel.
The decline in oil prices was a welcome relief for the overall economy and stock markets, which saw yields in the bond market ease as well. The S&P 500 added 0.6%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.2%, and the Nasdaq composite increased by 1.1%.
Several major companies reported stronger profits for the spring quarter than expected, including Palantir Technologies, which jumped 19.8% after its revenue leaped 93% in the same period last year. Caterpillar also rallied 10.5% after its profit and revenue exceeded expectations.
