Oil Prices Fall as US Releases More Oil, Increases Interest Rate Expectations
Oil prices declined on Wednesday due to increased flows through the Strait of Hormuz and plans by the US to release more oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Brent crude futures for December delivery decreased by 0.3% to $95.88 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for November delivery fell by 0.1% to $89.26 per barrel.
The increase in oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route, was attributed to remarks made by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday. He stated that more oil had been taken out of the strait in recent days than at any time in history, despite ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
However, prices also fell due to expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) could raise interest rates further, which would weigh on economic activity and oil demand. Fed Governor Lisa Cook said future rate adjustments would depend on the economy's response to monetary policy and upcoming inflation and employment data.
