Oil Prices Plummet Amid Renewed Tensions in Strait of Hormuz
Oil prices plummeted by nearly 3% on Wednesday as traders reevaluated prospects for US-Iran peace talks following renewed hostilities. Brent crude futures fell $2.67, or 2.68%, to $96.91 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude lost $3.43, or 3.65%, to $90.46 a barrel.
PVM analyst Tamas Varga attributed the downward pressure to increased activity at the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas flows. The strait has seen an uptick in ship traffic, which some saw as a sign that progress was being made towards ending the crisis.
However, hopes for a framework agreement between the US and Iran were dampened by recent US strikes on Iranian missile sites and vessels attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has been ongoing since April, with both sides indicating they had made progress in talks toward reopening the strait.
