Oil Prices Plummet, Petrol Price Relief Hopes Reignited in Nigeria
Global crude oil prices have dropped significantly, sparking renewed hopes for a reduction in petrol pump prices in Nigeria. On Monday, market survey data showed that Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell to $101.5 and $98 per barrel, respectively.
This represents declines of 2.29% and 2.37%, respectively, compared to the weekend's prices. The drop in oil prices comes despite heightened conflict in the Middle East, which has led to a decrease in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Data showed that the number of commodity vessels transiting the Strait dropped to about a dozen, down from around 35.
Despite the decline in crude oil prices, petrol pump prices remain high in Nigeria. Filling stations in Abuja are currently dispensing petrol at between N1,395 and N1,450 per litre, although some retail outlets have reduced their prices due to competition in the downstream petroleum sector.
