Oil Prices Soar as Hormuz Tensions Escalate Further
Oil prices have continued to rise amid fading hopes for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway in the Middle East. The conflict between Iran and the US has been ongoing, with no signs of resolution in sight.
The situation took a turn for the worse when US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire over the weekend. Although Trump said talks would resume this week, investors remain pessimistic about the outcome.
Trump denied reports that he had offered Iran sanctions relief and frozen funds in return for concrete steps on its nuclear program. He called the report a 'hoax' and demanded it be retracted. However, Iranian officials have privately expressed concerns about reaching an agreement to reopen the Strait before the US midterm elections in November.
The lack of progress has pushed fuel prices higher, with Brent crude rising nearly 2% to trade above $107 a barrel. The average price of diesel in the UK reached a record high, according to motoring organisation RAC.
