Oil Prices Soar as US-Iran Tensions Escalate Amid AI Boom
The global economy is facing rising oil prices as tensions between the US and Iran escalate. The price of Brent crude surged to $87.72 a barrel on Monday, up around 5% for its fourth consecutive day. This increase comes despite efforts by the Trump administration to negotiate with Iran.
In March, President Trump ordered the release of 172 million barrels from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in response to Iran's actions. However, the SPR has now fallen below 300 million barrels for the first time since 1983, standing at 298.7 million barrels last week.
The oil market is on high alert as international benchmark Brent crude rose 5% to $87.72 a barrel on Monday, while US West Texas Intermediate futures climbed about 5% to close at $82.13 per barrel.
In other news, the tech world is pushing forward with advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced that his company and six asset firms are working together to turn AI chips into a new asset class, with a goal of mobilizing over $500 billion in third-party capital for hyperscalers, frontier AI labs, and enterprises.
Meta is also making moves in the AI space by opening source its most powerful AI models and launching new ones for consumer devices. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company will open the weights for its latest AI model Muse Spark 1.2, allowing it to be downloaded and used by the public.
