Oil Prices Soar on Fading Hopes of US-Iran Peace Deal
Oil prices rose on August 12 as hopes of a U.S.-Iran peace agreement faded and fresh attacks on shipping vessels heightened concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East.
The Brent crude futures price increased by 0.9% to $89.7 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 1% to $84 per barrel.
The rise in prices came despite data showing a sharp increase in U.S. crude inventories, but traders focused on the possibility of prolonged disruptions to key shipping routes due to geopolitical tensions.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global energy markets as a significant share of internationally traded oil and petroleum products passes through this waterway, and any prolonged reduction in traffic could tighten supplies and increase price volatility.
