Oil Prices Soar Past $100 as Short-Term Yields Rise

Oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel following the US attack on several Iranian oil tankers, marking the first time since July that crude has reached triple digits. The news sent shockwaves through Wall Street and the bond market, with yields on short-term Treasurys rising in response.

The yield on the 2-year Treasury hit its highest level since July 2024, a move attributed to inflationary pressures caused by higher oil prices. According to Guy LeBas, chief fixed income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, 'Whether it be construction expenditures that go into the housing market, or whether it be the cost of delivering toys to a big box store, et cetera.'

LeBas expects the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates if inflation remains high or increases further. He notes that new Fed Chair is 'at least threatening to be a little bit more aggressive in raising interest rates and fighting inflation.'

Luke Tilley, Wilmington Trust Chief Economist, agrees that short-term Treasurys are influenced by short-term inflation and expectations of rate hikes. However, he cautions that if long-term yields rise too quickly, it could indicate the Fed is letting inflation get out of control.
