Oil Prices Soar, Treasury Yields Hit 20-Year High Amid US-Iran Tensions
Treasury yields surged to nearly two-decade highs on Wednesday as oil prices jumped back above $100 per barrel. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to its highest level since June 2007, reaching 5.08%, while the 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.38%, a level not seen before the global financial crisis.
The increase in bond yields is often linked to rising oil prices due to their impact on inflation. However, any optimism sparked by US-Iran discussions at the UN General Assembly was short-lived. The talks were described as 'lengthy' but with more work still needed, and the Strait of Hormuz remained a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies.
US President Donald Trump's suggestion to ban US exports of diesel fuel further unsettled energy prices. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that such a move would not help bring down prices, while the American Petroleum Institute warned it could lead to higher prices for Americans and even global economic damage.
