Oil Prices Surge as Iran Demands US Lift Sanctions for Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Oil prices surged on Monday after Iran stated that the US must lift sanctions, pay reparations, and meet several other conditions before the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Brent crude futures rose $2.48, or 3%, to $86.03 a barrel by 10:44 a.m. EDT (1444 GMT), while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures increased $2.43, or 3.1%, to $80.61.

The US and Iran are not currently in talks, with Tehran refusing to start negotiations until Washington meets its conditions, including an end to sanctions and military threats. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reiterated this stance on Sunday, citing the interim deal signed in June as the basis for any potential agreement.

Experts believe that tighter supplies may be imminent due to Iran's added demands. 'Crude futures are seeing gains in the early trade as the US/Iran peace deal looks to be delayed along with further strikes from Ukraine hitting Russian refineries and tankers in the Black Sea,' said Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial.

Recent attacks on Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery and ADNOC vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz have also contributed to the increase in oil prices. The Houthis struck the refinery on Sunday, while 15 ADNOC vessels were attacked between the beginning of the conflict and this week.
