Oil prices broke above $100 a barrel on Wednesday due to heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments. Brent crude futures rose 2.83% to hit $100.69 a barrel after reaching an earlier high of $100.95. US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 2.34%, reaching its highest price since early June at $95.21 a barrel.

The dispute over the Strait of Hormuz has increased pressure on global energy markets, weighing heavily on major European stock indexes. The US Maritime Administration warned that the risk to commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman remains high. This has led to concerns about further disruption to oil flows through the region.

Energy prices also weighed on natural gas markets, with the Dutch TTF gas contract rising 2.75% to €77.92 per megawatt-hour, its highest level since January 2023. The European Commission said that while EU gas storage levels are lower than in previous years, there is no immediate risk to gas supply.

Stock markets reflected the pressure from the energy moves, with Paris falling 0.61%, Frankfurt losing 0.50%, London declining 0.22%, and Milan dropping 0.39%. Asian markets showed a mixed picture, with Seoul's Kospi ending 1.40% higher due to a 3.51% gain for SK hynix.
