Oil Slicks Emerge in Iranian Waters Amid Gulf Conflict

Two oil slicks have appeared in Iranian waters off Oman's coast, raising concerns about environmental damage to the Gulf. The incident comes as tit-for-tat attacks on oil tankers and vessels by Iran and the United States continue.

A potential disaster is unfolding off Oman outside of the Strait of Hormuz, where a grounded tanker, the Caroline Bezengi, has leaked Russian crude oil in a protected marine area, creating a massive slick estimated at 2,000 square km. The incident has not been linked to the conflict between Iran and the US.

Satellite imagery shows two new slicks inside the Gulf: one off the southern tip of Qeshm Island and another near Sirri Island in the center of the Gulf.
