Oil Surges Past $100/Barrel as Middle East Tensions Weigh on Stocks
The stock market took a hit on Wednesday as oil prices continued to climb, fueled by escalating tensions in the Middle East. The blue-chip Dow finished down 0.7%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.6%. Energy stocks were the only sector to show an increase.
Brent crude prices rose above $100 a barrel, with U.S. Treasury yields also on the rise. The U.S. 2-Year Treasury yield moved up 2 basis points to 4.42%, while the U.S. 10-Year Treasury yield increased by 4 basis points to 4.84%.
Analyst Chris Lau of DIY Value Investing attributed the decline in stocks to 'Brent crude prices and persistently rising U.S. Treasury yields.' This week's inflation reports, including PPI on Thursday and CPI on Friday, will be closely watched by traders.
