A judge in Osage County, Oklahoma has ruled that NextEra Energy Marketing violated state law by selling natural gas at excessive prices during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021.

The storm caused widespread power outages and natural gas price spikes across the central United States. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond stated that the judge granted partial summary judgment to the state, finding NextEra liable under the Oklahoma Emergency Price Stabilization Act and the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act.

A trial will determine damages, including alleged overcharges, restitution, and disgorgement. The case was previously dismissed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, but Drummond's office has brought multiple cases against energy marketers alleging they artificially raised natural gas prices during Winter Storm Uri.
