OMV Strikes Oil in Libya, Boosts Country's Energy Prospects
Austrian energy company OMV has announced a significant oil discovery in Libya's Sirte Basin. The Essar well, located in concession area C 103, is deemed commercially viable after technical and economic studies. According to OMV, the well can be developed quickly and brought online at a low cost due to its proximity to existing production facilities.
The discovery indicates total recoverable resources of up to 43 million barrels of oil. This news comes as Libya aims to boost its oil production, which currently stands at around 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd). The country's National Oil Corporation (NOC) is keen to increase production to 1.6 million bpd by the end of 2026.
OMV has a long history of exploration and production in North Africa, particularly in Libya, where it has been active for over 50 years. The company's executive vice president, Berislav Gašo, stated that the discovery is 'a major milestone' and highlights the value of long-term partnerships and technical excellence.
