OPEC+ Holds Oil Output Steady as Iran War Keeps Prices High

Seven key OPEC+ nations, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Iraq, have decided to maintain their current oil production levels through November. This decision comes despite a partial recovery in crude shipments from the Middle East, as ongoing tensions in the region keep global energy prices elevated. Brent crude remains near $100 a barrel, with recent attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz and rising shipping costs adding to market instability.

The OPEC+ alliance, comprising Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman, agreed to keep production unchanged from September levels. The group will revisit the situation on November 1. While Middle East crude exports have rebounded to near pre-war levels, around 17.5 to 19 million barrels per day, the recovery is costly and fragile. Shipping and insurance costs remain high, with tankers facing additional expenses of $15 to $20 per barrel.

Analysts warn that the situation could worsen if Iran escalates attacks on energy infrastructure. The UK Maritime Trade Operations has reported multiple strikes on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz since late September. Meanwhile, the G7 has announced plans to release 100 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves to ease market pressure, starting with a substantial diesel release within 20 days.

Asian countries, heavily reliant on Gulf oil, are closely monitoring the situation. Higher oil prices could strain India’s import bill and inflation, while the conflict’s outcome remains uncertain amid political tensions and military posturing.
