Pakistan Explores One Million Tonnes Wheat Import Amid Domestic Shortage

The federal government of Pakistan is exploring the import of one million tonnes of wheat to address a domestic grain shortage that has left national stocks unable to meet local demand.

A high-level meeting of the Wheat Board, chaired by National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, revealed that the collective grain demand from provinces has overwhelmed current emergency reserves managed by the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco).

The import operation aims to prevent potential market disruptions and ensure uniform supply distribution across all regions. A countrywide assessment showed that provincial requirements exceeded available stocks with Passco.
