Pasta Price Protests Rage in Italy Amid 'Greedflation' Fears
A potential pasta strike is looming in Italy, where consumers are fed up with rising prices. The Italian consumer organization Assoutenti initiated the one-week strike to protest the increasing cost of pasta, which has risen from €1.84 per kilo in 2022 to €2.13 in 2023.
The reason behind the price hike is the war in Ukraine and inflation, particularly affecting wheat prices. Although wheat prices seem to be falling, manufacturers claim that pasta on store shelves was still made with expensive wheat, contributing to the high costs.
Assoutenti accuses supermarkets of engaging in 'greedflation,' or profiteering from price increases. Italians are concerned about the affordability of their staple product and hope that the strike will pressure the government and manufacturers to reconsider their pricing strategies.
