Pembina Launches $4.6 Billion Gas-to-Power Project in Canada's Industrial Heartland

Pembina Pipeline Corp., along with its partners, is set to launch the Greenlight Electricity Centre (GLEC), a large-scale gas-to-power project in Canada's Industrial Heartland. The $4.6 billion (Can.) project aims to provide behind-the-meter power for Meta's upcoming 1-Gw data center, scheduled for completion by second-half 2030.

The GLEC project will utilize two high-efficiency gas turbines and steam turbines from Siemens Energy, with the total project cost expected to be approximately $4.6 billion (Can.). Pembina and Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners each hold a 47.5% stake in the Greenlight partnership, while Kineticor Asset Management holds 5%. The project's commercial structure aligns with Pembina's fee-based midstream model.

Pembina is evaluating additional gas-to-power opportunities tied to prospective data center developments and assessing recently acquired land for future projects. Scherman noted that the project could have implications for several of Pembina's existing business lines, including increased demand for Canadian natural gas and potentially supporting utilization of Pembina’s gas processing and transportation assets.
