Pentagon Secures Oil Deal with Venezuelan Firm Amid Controversy
The Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital has been making investments to boost defense industrial production since 2022. However, its latest move has taken a sharp turn with the involvement in an oil production deal between the United States and Venezuela announced by President Donald Trump.
The partnership is with private oil producer North American Blue Energy Partners, whose founder Alejandro Betancourt López is a polarizing figure in international commerce.
Betancourt's company will receive warrants from the Pentagon as part of the deal. These warrants give the government the right to buy shares at a predetermined price and can be converted into shares for very little money.
The federal government would get 20% of the oil produced by Betancourt's company 'at production cost', meaning at a favorable price, according to the White House. The State Department would also have the right of first refusal to buy the remaining 80% of the company's output.
