Petrol Prices Soar Across Nigeria

The pump price of petrol has surged across Nigeria, with prices reaching as high as N1,500 per litre in states such as Kano, Yobe, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba, and Zamfara. In major cities, the product is selling for about N1,430 per litre.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Federal Government to introduce measures to cushion the impact of rising petrol prices, including payment of reasonable wage awards to workers and sale of crude oil to local refineries in naira.

According to a resident of Yobe State, Hassan Auwalu, petrol currently sells for N1,500 per litre. 'I am buying petrol at N1,500 per litre,' he said. A civil servant in the state, Lawan Garba, reported that some filling stations were selling petrol at an even higher price.

In Kano State, petrol prices ranged from N1,460 to N1,500 per litre at most filling stations in the metropolis. Commercial tricycle operators increased their fares by about 50 percent, depending on the distance.
