Pritzker Asks Oil Companies to Share War Profits Amid Gas Price Surge

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is calling on major oil companies to share their 'wartime windfall profits' with consumers as gas prices continue to surge. In a letter sent to the CEOs of ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP America, ConocoPhillips, Continental Resources, Occidental Petroleum, and Shell USA, Pritzker urged them to provide relief through lower gasoline prices, refunds, or other measures.

Pritzker argued that oil companies have benefited financially while Illinois residents face rising fuel costs linked to instability in the Middle East. The governor pointed out that the average price of regular gasoline in Illinois has increased by over $1.30 per gallon since late February, reaching an average of $4.34 statewide and costing motorists an additional $2 billion.

Pritzker asked each company to state whether they are willing to return a portion of their profits to Illinois consumers through price reductions at the pump, direct refunds, or other forms of relief. He also requested detailed information about fuel pricing, refinery operations, and executive compensation, including refining margins, wholesale pricing decisions, and retail pass-through practices.

The governor's letter gives the companies until August 21 to respond. Pritzker emphasized that oil companies have a 'clear choice', help ease the burden for families or exploit the conflict to generate windfall profits.
