PURA Orders Rate Reduction for CT Natural Gas Companies
Connecticut natural gas rates are set to decline after the Public Utilities Regulation Authority (PURA) made its final decision on Wednesday. The companies, Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation (CNG) and Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG), initially sought rate increases but were instead ordered to reduce their rates due to over-earning in previous years.
CNG customers can expect a decrease of just under $9 per month, while SCG customers will see a drop of $3 monthly. The proposed rate increase for CNG was over $6 per month, and the proposed rate increase for SCG was over $13 monthly.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong praised PURA's decision, stating that 'PURA was right from the start to slash these rates.' He added that Connecticut families cannot afford to bankroll padded profits and unnecessary expenses. However, a spokesperson for Avangrid, CNG and SCG's parent company, expressed disappointment with the decision.
The decrease in natural gas rates comes as many consumers may start using more utilities during the colder months. A New Haven resident noted that anything that can help lower expenses is appreciated, especially in areas with tight budgets.
