Putin Comments Spark Profit-Taking in Wheat Futures

Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures fell on Thursday as Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated a possible peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Putin's comments prompted profit-taking among traders following a sharp rally over the past month driven by worries about potential disruptions to Black Sea grain exports from Russia and Ukraine.

The price drop comes after wheat futures reached multi-year highs earlier this week. Putin said there was a chance of a peace agreement in Ukraine, noting that restarting negotiations had become more difficult due to Ukrainian attacks on shipping and Kyiv's request for civilian aircraft to avoid Russian airspace.

Some traders warned that Putin's statements did not indicate an immediate reduction in military activity and that physical disruptions to Black Sea grain shipments remained unchanged. Ukraine's combined grain and oilseed exports declined to 1.2 million metric tons in August from 2.5 million tons in July, according to Ukrainian traders union UGA.

Market participants are monitoring how suppliers will respond to a wheat import tender announced on Thursday by Saudi Arabia. Russia regularly supplies wheat to Saudi Arabia, and the move could impact global wheat prices.
