Qatar Doubles Down on LNG Expansion Plans Amid Regional Challenges
Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its liquefied natural gas production capacity, despite damage sustained by LNG facilities. The country aims to double its LNG production to 145 million tonnes per year by 2030 through a new expansion project.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud Al Thani, Governor of Qatar Central Bank and Chairman of Qatar Investment Authority, stated that Qatar remains committed to its expansion plans. He attributed the country's resilience in addressing regional challenges to the accumulation of fiscal surpluses over the past years.
Qatar has made significant progress in diversifying its economy, with the non-hydrocarbon sector contributing 70% to GDP in recent years. The country reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio from 60% to 40%, maintaining a sovereign credit rating of AA and having substantial reserves held by Qatar Central Bank.
The Qatar Investment Authority is focused on creating sustainable value for future generations through a long-term investment strategy, with an emphasis on technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation. The central bank is also implementing AI projects, four of which have been completed, to reduce costs and accelerate workflows.
