Qatar Unfazed by Damage, Presses Ahead with LNG Expansion Plans
Qatar is committed to expanding its liquefied natural gas production capacity despite damage sustained by LNG facilities, according to Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud Al Thani, Governor of Qatar Central Bank and Chairman of Qatar Investment Authority. Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum 2026 in New York, Sheikh Bandar announced plans to double Qatar's LNG production capacity to 145 million tonnes per year by 2030.
The non-hydrocarbon sector has grown significantly, contributing 70% to Qatar's GDP, up from 40% in 2011. This growth is attributed to the accumulation of fiscal surpluses and the establishment of reserves and funds that have strengthened the economy's resilience.
Qatar also boasts a strong external financial position and substantial reserves held by the Qatar Central Bank, alongside one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds. The Qatar Investment Authority is pursuing a long-term investment strategy focused on creating sustainable value for future generations, with an emphasis on technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
