QatarEnergy Delegation Heads to Bangladesh Amid LNG Supply Halt
A QatarEnergy delegation is set to arrive in Bangladesh on September 9 to discuss resuming liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, which have been halted since March due to the US-Israel war on Iran and navigation disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. The company announced 'force majeure' on March 4, ceasing LNG supply to Bangladesh.
The visit follows a high-powered Bangladeshi delegation's trip to Qatar earlier, where Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani assured Bangladesh of all possible support in ensuring energy security. QatarEnergy has expressed intention to supply at least one LNG cargo soon and ensure smooth LNG supply from next year.
Bangladesh is currently struggling to meet its gas demand amid elevated LNG prices, with state-run Petrobangla buying LNG at over $28 per million British thermal unit (MMBtu) on the spot market. If Qatar would supply LNG, the price would be less than half of that, even amidst high international energy prices.
