QatarEnergy has positioned a fleet of empty liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers in the Persian Gulf, suggesting a potential increase in LNG exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Satellite images and ship-tracking data analyzed by Bloomberg News reveal at least 12 ballast LNG carriers owned or chartered by QatarEnergy are currently anchored in the region.
The vessels have the capacity to hold approximately 1.1 million tons of LNG, which represents about 2% of the global tanker fleet's total carrying capacity. This strategic move indicates Qatar’s readiness to ramp up shipments, possibly in response to rising global demand or geopolitical factors.
The presence of these tankers underscores Qatar’s role as one of the world’s largest LNG exporters. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for energy shipments, could see heightened activity if Qatar proceeds with increased exports.
