Qatar's LNG Export Capacity Takes a Hit Amid Ongoing Conflict

The conflict in Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City has had far-reaching consequences for the country's LNG export capacity. In March, attacks on the Pearl GTL plant caused extensive damage to major LNG facilities, resulting in a 17 percent reduction in Qatar's LNG production capacity, or around 12.8 million tonnes annually.

QatarEnergy subsequently declared force majeure on gas supply contracts with four countries and turned to the international spot market to maintain supplies to customers. The company spent around $1 billion purchasing LNG cargoes from Louisiana-based exporter Venture Global for delivery to customers in Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, and Taiwan.

The move underscores the increasingly important role of US LNG in helping Doha meet contractual obligations while its own production remains constrained. However, Qatar could strengthen its resilience by becoming a larger LNG portfolio player, rather than relying on domestically produced gas.
