Rajasthan Leads India's Olive Oil Production Amid Favorable Climate Conditions
Rajasthan has emerged as India's largest producer of olive oil, leveraging its dry climate and large agricultural areas to support the development of olive cultivation. Olive trees are typically associated with Mediterranean climates, but Rajasthan has successfully adapted this practice in its dry regions.
The state's favorable conditions, including suitable soil conditions in selected areas, drip irrigation, and government support for olive cultivation, have enabled the growth of olive saplings brought from Israel in 2007. The first harvest was obtained in 2012, marking a significant milestone in Rajasthan's olive production journey.
Today, olive cultivation is spread across several districts of Rajasthan, including Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Jalore, Jaipur, and Alwar. Commercial olive oil production began in September 2013, with an extraction and processing facility established in Bikaner as part of the state's olive cultivation project.
Rajasthan is not alone in India's olive-producing landscape; other states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh also cultivate olives. However, Rajasthan remains the leading producer, with Spain holding the title of the world's largest producer of olive oil.
