RBI Expected to Maintain Interest Rates Amid Oil Price Volatility
The Reserve Bank of India is expected to keep its benchmark interest rates unchanged in its upcoming policy meeting scheduled for August 3-5. The central bank's Monetary Policy Committee is prioritizing caution due to unpredictable fluctuations in global Brent crude oil prices.
Brent crude oil prices have shown notable volatility, recently climbing to a six-week high of $102 per barrel before retreating toward $85. The Reserve Bank of India is expected to prioritize price stability, as any sudden surge in oil costs could quickly feed into domestic inflation.
Despite the external pressure from oil prices, current domestic data remains relatively stable. The average inflation rate for the first quarter was recorded at 4%, which sits comfortably within the Reserve Bank's targeted band of 2% to 6%. Financial analysts suggest that unless oil prices translate into sustained long-term inflationary pressure, the committee is likely to continue its wait-and-watch strategy.
