RBI Flags Price Risks Amid Below-Normal Monsoon and Higher Crude Oil Prices
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has flagged price risks in its August bulletin, citing external headwinds such as below-normal monsoon prospects and higher crude oil prices. The central bank noted that despite these challenges, the Indian economy remains resilient due to firm domestic demand, improving industrial activity, and strong corporate profitability.
The RBI highlighted that retail automobile sales accelerated in July, driven by stronger tractor and two-wheeler sales, while urban demand also remained firm. Industrial activity was supportive, with PMI data showing firms' expectations for future output improved, indicating a positive outlook for demand and new business opportunities.
However, inflation has begun to face pressure from food prices, with headline CPI inflation increasing marginally in July due to supply-side pressures. The increase in headline inflation was primarily due to rising rice, wheat, and edible oil prices, as well as higher input costs.
